Geneva: Luxury and shopping in the “Capital of Peace”

Geneva attracts tourists from all over the world and is famous for its luxury, Swiss watches, incredible museums and extensive financial sector. Home to large and important international organizations, such as the UN, the Red Cross and the WHO. Geneva has been given the title of “Capital of Peace”.

It is a cosmopolitan and luxurious city, a true example of “Swiss quality”. You could pay a visit to the historical centre, sunbathe and admire the view from the Bains des Pâquis, over Lake Geneva, the lake which serves as the city’s backdrop. It is the best-known and most-popular beach among the inhabitants of Geneva, and its water is crystal-clear – a divine scenario.

In summer, you can explore the various beaches around the lake, go to the local swimming pool or simply enjoy the city’s parks, including the Parc de La Grange, which overlooks Lake Geneva. If you like boat rides, you just have to go to the marina and hire a boat – just don’t let the prices scare you! After all, it’s Switzerland we’re talking about.

The Jet d’Eau is the highest-spouting artificial fountain in the world and it makes the city even more fascinating.

Other equally interesting sites worth discovering are the Natural History Museum, the Patek Philippe Museum, St. Peter’s Cathedral and the Palace of Nations, home to the UN.

After dark, the city’s nightlife springs into action – usually after 8 pm. The meeting point for young people is the old Geneva Market, which today houses the Brasserie des Halles de l’Ile, a lively venue with bars, music and restaurants.

Geneva is a gourmet capital and offers an infinite variety of places to eat. You could try some of the typical dishes, such as fondue, rösti potatoes and raclette or a Bratwürst mit Brot, a kind of Swiss hot dog. And, of course, you simply have to try some real Swiss chocolate! There will be plenty of shops to choose from. Get ready to spend several dozen Swiss francs on gourmet chocolate.

How can you talk about Geneva without mentioning shopping?

The elegant and luxurious city offers many shopping options and you will find not only luxury items but also more reasonably-priced articles that anyone can afford.

Some of the best shopping spots can be found in the Rue du Rhône and the Rue de Rive. They are justifiably considered the main shopping streets in Geneva, along with the ones that run parallel to them.

You might also like to pop into Manor and Globus, two big department stores offering luxury goods, with everything you could possibly dream of!

If you are looking for a summer holiday destination, then Geneva could be a great choice.
